10 Simple Home Remedies for Constipation

Constipation is a common problem across all age groups. Our erratic lifestyle coupled with poor eating habits are the main causes of this condition. While constipation is not a serious ailment, ignoring to treat it in time can result in other health issues. Before you visit a doctor or take OTC medicines, you may try a few home remedies for constipation.


Something as simple as water can help you a great deal in this condition. Water helps flush out toxins and keeps the intestines moist to ensure easy bowel movement. It is recommended to have 8-10 glasses of water per day to ensure good health. If you are suffering from constipation then it is suggested to have an extra two to four glasses of water each day. You can even replace 1-2 glasses of water with fresh, sugar free fruit or vegetable juices.

It is essential to consume enough fiber to keep your digestive system intact. Fiber rich vegetables should thus form a part of your daily diet. Beans, broccoli, potatoes, carrots, sprouts, mushroom, cabbage, cauliflower, eggplant, pumpkin, spinach and peas are among some of the vegetables that are rich in fiber.

Lemon Juice

Lemon offers several health benefits and one of it is relief from constipation. Lemon juice contains citric acid that helps flush out the undigested content and toxins that cause constipation. Squeeze a fresh lemon in a cup of warm water and have it to treat constipation.

Baking Soda

Baking Soda works wonder during this condition. Add a teaspoon of baking soda in ¼ cup of warm water and drink the mixture in one go. Baking soda neutralizes the acid and helps things move smoothly through your intestines.

Aloe Vera

This herb is also known for its medicinal qualities. It is best to have aloe vera gel in its pure form to cure constipation. However, if it isn’t available you may go for aloe vera juice which is readily available in the market. Consume a cup of aloe vera juice or two tablespoons of aloe vera gel, preferably in the morning, to get relief from constipation.

Flax Seeds

Flax seeds eaten whole or in crushed form can ease constipation worries. You can either add them to your breakfast every morning or take them along with a glass of lukewarm water. Just make sure to avoid flax seeds oil as it does not cure constipation.

Olive Oil

Consuming olive oil also helps in getting relief from constipation. It lubricates the digestive system and allows things to move via your colon. Have one tablespoon of olive oil every morning on empty stomach to avoid constipation. You may add a teaspoon of lemon juice to it.


Mix a tablespoon of ghee with a hot glass of milk and drink it before retiring to bed. This age old super remedy will surely smoothen your bowel movements.
