5 Effective Home Remedies for Dandruff

The easiest and the most essential thing to do to eliminate dandruff is to wash your hair thoroughly each day. Washing hair regularly helps you get rid of the excess oils that promote the penetration of malassezia which is one of the main causes of dandruff. While many of the anti dandruff shampoos available in market help in washing off these white flakes most of these chemical based products leave your hair dry and frizzy or cause some other side effect. Here are a few simple home remedies for dandruff that shall help eliminate dandruff without causing any negative impact on your hair or scalp.


Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is one of the best best remedies for dandruff. This natural herb has anti fungal and antibacterial elements that help in keeping your hair and scalp clean, healthy and free from dandruff. Take fresh Aloe Vera leaves and peel them to obtain a clear jelly like stuff. Blend this gel thoroughly and apply it evenly on your scalp and hair. Leave it on for around 10 minutes. Rinse with water. Use Aloe Vera two to three times a week to get rid of dandruff.

However, if you do not have time to prepare this paste, you may apply Aloe Vera juice which is readily available in the market.


Mix some lemon juice with fuller’s earth to form a thick paste. Apply it on your scalp and leave it on for around 10-15 minutes. Use this effective mixture at least once a week.

Lemon peel also helps in decreasing dandruff to a great extent. Boil the peels of 3 or more lemons in water depending on your hair length. Apply the solution on your hair after it cools down and rinse off after some time. Apply this solution twice a week to see the difference.

Rinsing hair with fresh lemon juice also helps.

Fenugreek Seeds

Applying fenugreek seeds is another effective way to get rid of dandruff. Soak fenugreek seeds overnight in water. Grind the seeds in the morning to form a smooth paste. Apply it evenly on your hair and scalp and leave it on for about 30 minutes. Wash off with a good shampoo and then rinse with the same water in which you had soaked the seeds. Repeat the procedure at least twice a week to do away with the dandruff.

Neem Leaves

Neem leaves are yet another solution for dandruff. Boil a few neem leaves in water for around 30 minutes, until the water turns greenish in color. Blend the leaves in a mixer to form a smooth paste. Now, apply this paste on your scalp, leave it on for about an hour and wash off. The greenish neem water may be used to rinse the hair for better results. It also makes the hair healthier and eliminates itching.


This is another wonderful herb that helps in washing off the dandruff. Reetha powder is readily available in the market. All you have to do is to mix it in water to form a smooth paste and keep it overnight. Apply it on your scalp and hair in the morning. Leave it on for around an hour and then wash it thoroughly. Adding amla powder to the mixture makes it more effective.
