Bhel puri is a snack which can be prepared in 5 minutes and is light on calories. Also, you can add multiple other ingredients to your bhel puri to add to the crunch and differentiate the flavor.

It is a savory snack and highlights the category of chat food. Bhelpuri is a famous roadside Street food of Mumbai. It is also highly popular in the food corners of big shopping malls. People are often found appreciating this yummy snack on beaches, near parks and gardens, chat corners etc.

This mouthwatering dish is prepared by mixing crispy puffed rice and colorful chopped vegetables like boiled tomato, potato, onions, and green chilly in appropriate quantity. Adding to its beauty and taste we can add fried peanuts, crispy puri and salted namkeen sev, garnished with freshly chopped green coriander. It is best served with sweet imli chutney and salted and spicy green chutney. It is a delicious side food, good for health and calorie conscious people because it is a low fat food, with high nutritional value.

Bhelpuri is easy to cook because it hardly takes 15 minutes to be prepared along with the fact that almost all the needed ingredients are available in our kitchens most of the time. It is instant cook and an instant serve dish that catches all the eyes on the table

Bhel Puri

Bombay Street food has Bhel Puri as one of the most loved chaat item. It is so very simple to bring together and hardly requires any time.

  • 2 cups Puffed Rice
  • 2 small Potatoes boiled
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 tbsp Raita Boondi
  • 1 tbsp Green Coriander Leaves
  • 3 to 4 Puri
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 pinches Chaat Masala
  • 1 tbsp Nylon Sev


  1. Crush the boiled potatoes coarsely.
  2. Soak the boondi in 1 cup of water for 2 to 3 minutes and strain in a sieve.

  3. Let it stand till it loses the moisture and becomes little dry.

  4. Chop the onions and green coriander leaves very finely.

  5. Take the puris and break each into 2 to 3 pieces.

  6. Assemble the Bhelpuri by taking the boiled potato pieces, onion, sev, boondi in a deep bowl.

  7. Sprinkle the salt and chaat masala and add the puffed rice.

  8. Toss them all gently a few times. Lastly, garnish with green coriander leaves and the puris.

  9. Serve immediately else the puffed rice will turn soggy.

  10. If making for later use, keep the puffed rice and nylon sev aside while preparing the rest of the mixture. While serving, mix them all together and toss.

Fried puri is an essential item as it adds the crunch bites in the bhel puri. My kids always eat the puris from the bhel puri first. 🙂

Soaked boondi adds a balance of crunch to the bhel puri. Though if you are adding saunth and chutney then you can add dry boondi as well.

Adding potatoes is optional though it helps in adding a some weight to the recipe. Else bhel puri is so light that you won’t even feel any thing in your stomach.
