Dal Fry Dhaba Style

definitely enjoy once in a while.

Dal fry, a popular Indian lentil recipe is most commonly enjoyed at the dhabas but also served in restaurants. The dish is eaten all over India but its origin is Punjab which has the credit of providing many other tasty traditional dishes.

  • 1 cup Yellow Tur Dal
  • 1 level teaspoon Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1 medium sized Onion
  • 2 small Tomatoes
  • 1 Green Chilli
  • 1/2 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 10 Fresh Curry Leaves
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • Green Coriander Leaves to garnish
  • Water as needed


  1. Chop the onions and cube the tomatoes.
  2. Cut the green chilli into small pieces.

  3. Wash the dal thoroughly and soak it at least for 1 hour.

  4. Heat a pressure cooker and add in the dal along with the equal amount of water.

  5. Season it with salt and half of the red chilli.

  6. Pressure cook on high heat for 2 whistles.

  7. Shut off the flame and let it stand till the pressure releases.

  8. Open the lid and lightly mash the dal.
  9. Add more water if dal is too thick. Dal consistency can be adjusted as per preference.

  10. Now, heat a heavy bottom pan at low flame.

  11. Heat oil and put in the cumin seeds and curry leaves.
  12. Once they start spluttering add the onion.

  13. Saute until translucent and add the ginger garlic paste and green chilli.
  14. Again stir fry for a few seconds so that the paste is cooked and then toss in the tomatoes.

  15. Let them cook till they turn soft.
  16. Add salt, red chilli powder, turmeric powder. Put in the boiled dal after that

  17. Cover partially and let the dal keep on simmering for about 8 to 10 minutes.

  18. Check and adjust seasonings.

  19. Lastly, garnish with green coriander leaves.

  20. Serve with boiled white rice and pickles.

Eating plain rice or jeera rice with dal fry makes for a yummy combination. The hot spicy dal fry with a variety of aromatic and flavorful spices can also be enjoyed with fluffy naans and tandoori rotis.
