  • 1 small cup Daliya
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Rai
  • 1/2 tsp Urad Dal
  • 1 pinch Hing
  • 1 piece Ginger (finely chopped)
  • 1 medium-sized Onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 small Carrot (finely chopped)
  • 1 small Capsicum (finely chopped)
  • A Few Vegetables (of your choice - peas, potatoes, spring onions etc)
  • 2 Green Chillies (chopped)
  • 10 Curry Leaves
  • 2 1/2 cups Water
  • Salt as required

  1. Prepare the ingredients for the upma.

  2. Heat a pan and dry roast the daliya till a nice aroma comes. Ensure that you don’t burn the daliya. It will taste bitter in that case.

  3. In another pan, take oil and when it gets hot, add rai, urad dal, and hing. When it starts to splutter, add chopped ginger green chillies and onion. Fry till the onions are cooked.

  4. Then add capsicum, carrot and curry leaves and fry for some time.

  5. Add 2.5 cups of water and let it boil.

  6. When the mixture comes to a boil, add the dry roasted daliya and mix it well. Add salt and keep stirring.

  7. The water will get absorbed and when you get upma-like consistency, turn off the flame.

  8. Serve hot with pickle or chutney.
