Many of us go through our lives without really knowing who we are, what we want, or what we can do. Sir Ken Robinson said in one of his TED talks, “This is a case of crisis in human resources. Just like natural resources, human skills are buried deep and need to be discovered.”
Feeling skeptical is a second nature to many. People face self-doubting thoughts frequently. But to lead a successful life, it is critical to overcome these inner demons.
Here are some techniques that we can practice to self-introspect and explicitly boost self-belief.
Techniques to boost self confidence
“Can I really do this?” “Is this even possible?” “Am I on the right track?” Questions such as these arise frequently in our mind. Self-doubt is the biggest obstacle in path of strengthening self-belief. The demon of negativity is very strong in many people. But to be successful, it is critical to silence the whiney voice and give way to positive thoughts. Winston Churchill rightly said: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” Ability to clear roadblocks is critical to move forward in life. And to do so, it’s important to be able to look at silver lining through all difficult situations.
Find a Mentor
Spending time with an influencing mentor is a wonderful way to strengthen self-belief. In Ayn Rand’s famous novel ‘Atlas Shrugged’, Dr. Robert Stadler says to Dagny Taggart “Have you ever felt the longing for someone you could admire? For something, not to look down at, but up to?” We all long for that kind of influencer in our lives, someone whose thoughts and actions affect us deeply. A good influencer is someone who leads by example. He helps us overcome our hidden fears, unblocks our mind, and brings out the best in us. We should strive to find such an influencer and spend quality time with him. The key point is to make the engagement mutually beneficial. Both mentor and mentee should bring valuable insights to the table. Such productive relationships can truly push us to change complete direction of our life.
There is a wide spectrum of factors that motivate for different people. Real motivation starts with introspection, understanding, acceptance and being true to oneself. Some people are driven by desire to earn wealth, some are driven by fame, success is an incentive for some folks, being competitive instigates some people, emerging as a winner matters a lot to a number of people, while some folks love to lead peaceful, carefree life. What matters is deep awareness of what stimulates each one of us on individual level.
The core motivational force, when comprehended, can help us perform our best. It build focus and reduces stress during execution. Above all, motivation helps us continue through various highs, lows and other intermediate stages while performing a task. As Winston Churchill has quoted, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, and it is the courage to continue that counts”. The real power of motivation lies in the fact that it gives us vigor and strength to continue and sit at the table in all circumstances.
Use Power of Visualization
Visualization as a technique is being used by many cultures since many generations. It is most commonly being practices by sportsmen, where players are asked to visualize very deeply that they are winners. ‘I am a big believer in visualization. I run through my races mentally so that I feel even more prepared.’ said Allyson Felix – the American Sprint athlete once.
Simply put, visualization technique involves closing eyes and actually seeing our desires come true on mental screen. Sometimes it also involves hearing, smelling or sensing in any other way that works. Deep visualization helps immensely in creating positive impact on our mind. It channelizes our thoughts and gears our actions in accurate direction to bring about the desired effect.
Not all the techniques above will work for everyone. But we can pick and choose those that work for us and strengthen our self-belief.
