A runny nose can be highly irritable. This is an ailment that results from a common flu or viral infection, and sometimes also because of allergies or sinusitis. There is an inflammation of the nasal passages which causes secretion of excessive amounts of fluid by the mucus glands thus resulting in a watery discharge from the nose.

Warm Lemon Water
This easy and effective home remedy can be prepared by squeezing the juice of one juicy lemon into a glass of warm water. This should be consumed immediately and regularly till the runny nose has subsided.
Eucalyptus Oil Steam
The goodness of Eucalyptus oil has been proven since long in controlling cough and cold symptoms. Its anti-inflammatory properties act to reduce the mucus secretion, thus controlling the watery discharge. To try this remedy, you should fill hot water in a wide bowl and then pour in a few drops of Eucalyptus Oil into it. Now, cover your face and head with a towel and try to deeply inhale the steam vapour. It will immediately rest your over-reactive nasal airways.
Salt water wash or a saline spray is one of the most widely prescribed remedies even by medical practitioners. Safely recommended for babies and older kids too, you can make your own salt water at home by adding about half a tsp of salt to 2 cups of warm water. Now, take a dropper and add a few drops to one of your nostrils. Then blow it out. Repeat this with the other nostril too. You will feel lighter and decongested after you do a saline wash.

Turmeric has been known since ancient medical practices for its anti-bacterial and anti-viral effects. So, it can be definitely be a good friend when you are down with a runny nose. To make turmeric milk, you should add 2 tsps of turmeric powder and a few crushed peppercorns into two cups of milk and boil it well for about 10 minutes. After it cools down, strain the milk and add 2 tsp of honey. Then have sips of this milk, which acts magically to counteract your cold symptoms.
This home-made herbal drink contains all natural ingredients which have been well known for their soothing and decongesting properties. The additional benefit is the awesome taste that this herbal tea has. To make this drink, add half tsp each of crushed ginger, sliced garlic and powdered cinnamon in water and boil it for 5 minutes. Strain this concoction into a cup; add one tsp of honey and a tbsp of lemon juice into it. Place a teabag of your choice, and enjoy warm sips of this tasty herbal tea. You can take 2-3 cups per day to ward off your runny nose symptoms.

Nothing can beat the effectiveness of garlic as an anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial food. So, try out this garlic soup remedy to stop a watery nose. Add 2-3 cloves of garlic (chopped) into two cups of water and let it boil for about five minutes. Next, grate an onion, extract its juice and add it to the boiling water. The onion juice also helps in overcoming common flu symptoms. Add a pinch of salt and your soup is ready. Consume this everyday till your problem has subsided.
These home remedies can cure a common cold quite fast and safely. But you should consult a doctor if your symptoms persist for more than 3 – 4 days. It could lead to severe sinusitis or chronic infection if left untreated.
