Semiya Upma

Semiya upma is a quick breakfast recipe which can be quickly made with lots of vegetables and is a good addition for breakfast. Though semiya are generally prepared in its sweeter version with milk and sugar but this savory version is super hit for breakfast.

  • 1 cup Roasted Vermicelli (200 grams)
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Rai
  • 1 tsp Urad Dal
  • 2 Green Chillies (chopped)
  • 1 inch Ginger (grated)
  • 1 medium-sized Onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 small Green Capsicum (finely chopped)
  • 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  • 3 cups Water
  • Salt as per taste


  1. Heat oil in a pan.
  2. Add rai and urad dal.

  3. When rai splutters and urad dal turns light brown, add ginger, curry leaves, and chillies.

  4. Fry till the raw smell of ginger goes.

  5. Add onions and fry for a few minutes. When it turns soft, add the capsicum. You can add any other vegetables of your choice.

  6. After it is cooked, add 3 cups of water and salt.

  7. Let the water start boiling on medium flame.

  8. Then add the roasted vermicelli.

  9. Stir well.

  10. When all the water gets absorbed, stir again so that the vermicelli/semiya does not get stuck to the pan.

  11. Your semiya upma is ready. Serve with coconut chutney.
