Rashes are the most common health ailment pertaining to breasts in women. The rashes under breasts can get itchy and red and can lead to skin diseases as well. This article will discuss why these rashes appear and what you can do to treat them.
Causes of Rashes Under Breasts
Rashes can be due to bacterial attack, like Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. The risk factors include diabetes and immune system disorders. The rashes are usually red, little raised and warm to touch.
This is the most common cause of rashes. A type of yeast called Candida is the main reason. They are usually red, but can also be white and scaly. Uncontrolled diabetes, obesity and chronic use of certain medication increases the risk of this infection. Intertrigo, is a condition, which causes red, sweaty rashes under the breast, mostly due to moisture and sweat as the bacteria thrives in this condition. This happens when skin from two parts rub each other over a prolonged period.
Skin allergy is another major reason for rashes under the breast. It can be atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema, which occur in people with a childhood history of rashes and also, in pregnant women.
This generally affects other parts of the body like elbows and knees, but this condition can also cause breast rashes. When it happens under the breasts, it is known as inverse psoriasis, where the skin folds and red, itchy and scaly rashes occur.

This is one of the best and most soothing ways to get relief from the itching and burning sensation of the rashes under breasts. Just wrap some ice in a thin cotton cloth and press against the affected area for about 10 minutes. You can take a break and then repeat again. Bathing with cold water can also help as it closes the pores, reducing sweat and hence chances of getting rashes.
This is known to be highly effective for treating breast rashes. First, clean the affected area, let it dry and then dust cornstarch over it, very lightly. You can repeat this twice or thrice in a day. But, there is a note of caution. Do not apply cornstarch over the moist area as fungi thrives on cornstarch. So, avoid this for sweaty, fungal rashes.
The antibacterial and antifungal properties of coconut oil help to give a soothing sensation over the rashes. Its greasy nature reduces friction on the skin. Apply coconut oil over the area twice or thrice in a day.
You can apply apple cider vinegar mixed with water over the affected area. But, first you need to clean the area with mild soap and pat it dry. In case, you notice irritation or discomfort, stop using this. It is also a good idea to wash your innerwear in a mix of white vinegar and water, and then dry it under direct sunlight. This helps to remove the chemical residue in our clothes, which might also cause rashes.
Calamine or Calandula Lotion
This helps to give a soothing effect on the rashes and expedites the healing process. Calamine helps to keep the area dry, thus reducing the chance of rashes. First, clean the affected area with mild soap and lukewarm water and then, pat it dry. Use a cotton ball to apply the lotion. You can do this several times in a day.
Other natural ingredients like lemon juice, tree oil, garlic, basil or aloe vera can also be used to treat these rashes. However, consult an expert before applying anything as your skin might react to some of these.
It is very important to keep the area under the breasts clean and dry to prevent rashes. Also, avoid scratching or rubbing the area as it will only aggravate the rashes and worsen the condition.
