Frankly, I buy a toothpaste only for two reasons: to keep my teeth clean and white. Since, I have not encountered a toothache yet (thank God!), I have not had a chance to visit a dentist.

However, I have seen my family and friends suffering from a toothache on numerous occasions and spending their precious money on dentist visits and medicines.

Causes of Toothache

Toothache is the result of the irritation or inflammation of the central region of the tooth.  Some of the common reasons for a toothache are:

  • Cavity
  • Tooth infection
  • Cracked tooth
  • Gingivitis (inflammation of gums)
  • Other gum infections and diseases

Home Remedies for Toothache

The moment you experience toothache, browse through your kitchen shelves and jars for tooth pain relief.

This is the best home remedy that my grandmother advocates! Just pop up a clove in your mouth and chew it around the area inflicted with toothache. Clove is an active antiseptic herb that has the age old history of treating dental pain. Some early researches also suggest the same. Just remember that  over dosage of clove or clove oil may cause a slight burning sensation in the mouth. So, it must be used as a temporary measure and in limited quantity but it will provide tooth pain relief instantly.

Salt and Pepper Paste

Salt and pepper have analgesic, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Take both the ingredients in equal quantities and put some drops of water on it to form smooth paste. Apply the paste on the affected area and leave it for some time and then rinse with water. Continuing the procedure for a few days will provide tooth pain relief.

Garlic is one of those antibiotic kitchen ingredients that is known to treat several conditions and it is also useful for treating toothache. Either crush garlic and apply on the affected area or chew it whole to get relief from it.

Salt Water Rinse

Take lukewarm water and add common salt to it and then rinse your mouth with it. Repeat it for two to three times in a day for quick relief. Salt water not only offers tooth pain relief, but also takes care of your oral health if you follow the routine at least once a day.

Onions have a bad reputation of causing awful mouth odour, but is known to have medicinal properties that may have remarkable effects on tooth pain. A little weird to learn, but the fact is that the antibacterial and antimicrobial properties in a raw onion can actually treat toothache. Just chew a slice of onion to get relief.

Turmeric Powder and Mustard Oil Paste

Add a few drops of mustard oil in about 3-4 pinches of turmeric powder to form a paste. Apply it to the affected area, you should feel the pain subsiding.

Take a few pinches of asafoetida and make a paste by adding a few drops of lemon to it. Put the mixture on a piece of cotton ball and keep in the affected area. It will ease off the pain at some time.

Home remedies are excellent ways for tooth pain relief during emergencies when you are away from your dentist. However, if the pain is too severe or lasts for more than 1-2 days, it is advisable to visit a dentist at the earliest.
